International Women's Day 2009

Celebrated annually on March 8, International Women’s Day marks the economic, political and social accomplishments of women worldwide. Though the day honors the many strides women have made in their struggle for equality, peace and fundamental freedoms, this year’s theme—“Women and Men United to End Violence Against Women and Girls”—also serves as a stark reminder that there is much more work to be done:

Did you know?

  • Of the 1.2 billion people living in poverty worldwide, 70 percent are women
  • Two-thirds of the world's 880 million illiterate adults are women, and of the 125 million children who currently do not attend school, girls represent a staggering 70 percent
  • Women in developing countries on average travel more than four miles to fetch water, carrying 5.3 gallons per day
  • 80 percent of the world's 27 million refugees are women
  • Women perform two-thirds of the world's work but receive only 10 percent of the world's income
  • One in three women around the world is likely to be a victim of gender-based violence in their lifetime, including sexual abuse, rape, genital mutilation, trafficking and forced prostitution

Global Impact charities are taking a stand, providing women and girls with the supports that will allow them to thrive and flourish: education, health care, microloans and job skills training and legal guidance. They also work to empower men in communities worldwide to challenge social norms and advocate for women’s rights.

Member charities, including American Jewish World Service, American Refugee Committee, CARE, International Rescue Committee, Planned Parenthood Federation of America – International Program, U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Women for Women International, also work to combat gender-based violence in areas of conflict, where each is actively working to put an end to atrocities against women and girls.
