Heifer International had been working in Haiti for a number of years, helping Haitians to improve their lives by promoting and teaching them about agricultural livelihoods. Through Heifer’s efforts, families receive the necessary tools, seeds and feed to create backyard vegetable gardens or to raise animals such as goats, poultry or even fish.

Then the earthquake struck Haiti. Immediately, staff from Heifer coordinated with local and international relief organizations to help deliver humanitarian aid, food and transportation to more than 2,000 injured and displaced people.

At the same time, Heifer donors and supporters generously provided more than $1 million to help fund the rehabilitation work that lays ahead in Haiti. Heifer’s approach to the country’s long-term recovery plan is to partner with other organizations in the region and promote and support the development of sustainable food systems. The program includes training Haitian communities on environmental issues, social issues and the benefits of nutritional health to their overall welfare. Finally, Heifer International is also working with partner organizations to design community development plans to respond to immediate constituency needs. Heifer has formed an emergency team to oversee the successful implementation of the program.
