City of Seattle Employees Support Disaster Relief in Haiti, Chile
The City of Seattle, a Global Impact workplace giving partner, adopted legislation on March 15, 2010 that gives city employees the option of converting accumulated and unused vacation time to benefit the victims of the 2010 Haiti and Chile earthquakes. This legislation comes shortly after King County, WA designated the Global Impact Haiti Earthquake Fund as the sole recipient of King County employee donations.
The combined catastrophic earthquakes have affected an estimated 5 million people in Haiti and Chile. The two countries sustained considerable damage and left approximately 200,000 people killed and millions suffering without food, clothing, water, or other basic necessities for survival.
"With so many people suffering in the wake of these disasters, it is imperative we provide every opportunity for the people of Seattle to help those in desperate need," said Seattle Council member Licata who sponsored the legislation. "Converting vacation hours to a donation is a simple way to help out locally to make an important difference for the people of Haiti and Chile."
Global Impact is currently providing substantial support to the relief efforts associated with the effects and aftermath of the earthquakes through its network of 55 leading U.S.-based international charities.
