Real Result: Disaster Recovery and Education

Hope Emerges from the Rubble

“This school is better than our previous school where we didn’t have good facilities like today. Now, we have computer, a beautiful building and a good library where I can read a lot of books.

As the third anniversary of the tsunami approaches, the landscape of the coastal communities devastated by the tsunami that took the lives of 168,000 Indonesians is changing. New buildings are emerging from the rubble of previous foundations, schools have been rebuilt and rehabilitated, children are studying and playing again and there is hope in their hearts and peace in the air.

Over the past two and a half years of reconstruction and rehabilitation in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, Global Impact member charity World Vision has focused on providing support in a number of key areas including shelter, public buildings and infrastructure, water and sanitation, health, economic recovery and protection and education.

World Vision's legacy will last a life time. Tens of thousands of children will attend one of the 14 new World Vision constructed schools and learn from World Vision-trained teachers.

Zakia, an 11-year-old tsunami survivor is a student at the SD20 and SD21 school World Vision reconstructed in Aceh. She is delighted with the modern facilities and the new methods of teaching her teachers are now using.

“This school is better than our previous school where we didn’t have good facilities like today. Now, we have computer, a beautiful building and a good library where I can read a lot of books. Thank God, I’m really happy with this help from World Vision,” Zakia said.”

“World Vision also provided us with school uniforms, school kits, text books and now we wear our uniform that was given by World Vision, I’m so happy we received so many donations from World Vision.”

“My favorite place in this school is the library and the computer room. I love reading and there are a lot of good reading books in the library,” she added with a big grin.
