As China struggles to deal with the aftermath—and aftershocks—of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that has claimed the lives of 69,127 people to date, attention has shifted to a large “quake lake” that formed behind a dam of rock and soil dislodged by the eruption. Aftershocks and heavy rains could cause the lake, which holds 50 billion gallons of water, to break through the dam, threatening the lives of up to 1.3 million people downstream.
The earthquake struck on the afternoon of May 12, when most children were in school, and several schools collapsed, killing the students. It also destroyed an estimated 3.5 million homes. As aftershocks continued, residents were afraid to return home and were sleeping in tents, under tarps or in the open.
Relief teams from Global Impact member charities were among the first to deliver aid to survivors, providing tents and temporary shelters, blankets, drinking water, food, milk for children and emergency medical care.
An AmeriCares shipment brought in antibiotics, vitamins, blankets and other medical supplies necessary to treat the immediate needs of earthquake victims. Save the Children is establishing safe child-friendly spaces where children can gather, and to help support parents and caregivers while they seek assistance, recover from the grief of losing family and friends, and start to rebuild their lives.
